Progress at last on the Damaged Ralph Allen Pillars

by on 14 April, 2016

For months Cllr Cherry Beath has been chasing the Council on when action will be taken to repair our historic Ralph Allen Pillars. It is nearly a year since the pillars were damaged by large overweight vehicles using the junction, and knocking the eastern finial out of position, and chipping the column.

Cherry said; “I am now informed arrangementsĀ have been made for the specialist contractor Strachey Historic Conservation to undertake an inspection of the pillar on Tuesday 3rd May 2016, which they will carry out from a scaffold platform. Temporary traffic lights will be in place from 9.00am to 3.00pm on Tuesday 3rd May to maintain pedestrian access around the scaffolded pillar.

Following the inspection Strachey Historic Conservation will prepare a report to set out how best to move the stone pillar back into position. We envisage that this will require the use of a crane (the report will detail the type of crane required), and therefore a closure of Prior Park Road will probably be needed to provide sufficient space to carry this out. It would be ideal if this could be arranged to take place on a day during the half term week commencing Monday 30th May 2016. However this will be dependent on the complexities involved (we do not want to damage the stone any further), and also on the availability of the appropriate type of crane.

However the intention would certainly be to move the stone during early summer (subject to any current unforeseen problems).

I have also been in contact with the Bath WH Enhancement Fund Chair, who has kindly expressed an interest to help.

I will keep you informed”
